    Etude Review: great work
    I enjoyed this one. Harmony sounds a lot like Prokofiev's works. But it also has some parts where the melodic line with a strange rhythm reminds me more of Chopin. Anyway, good work.

    Review: Pensive and Moody: A Beautiful Piano Study

    Mr. van Schie has written a very lovely Nocturne which serves as "an exercise for tone quality and harmony." But it is very lovely in and of its own right. While I might quibble about the level designation (primarily because I don't think that a lot of level 1-3 students can easily play or roll a 9th or a 10th), this would make a beautiful recital piece for even an adavnced student. An intermediate student could also learn it and play it well, but I think that it would shine under the skill of an advanced pianist. Why? This piece, while sounding so simple, would require good tone control and lyricism. The chord progressions and modulations are pensive and fresh, innovative yet comfortingly familiar. In short, this would make an excellent addition to any young pianist's repertoire!

    Review: Left Me Breathless!

    This piece at first glance looks impossible, but, when the repeats rolled around, it became clear that if the hands are properly chosen, it is merely quite difficult. The rhythms and harmonies are gripping from start to finish. I was completely carried away by this captivating music, something which does not often happen to me. It does require a good piano, with the middle pedal in good regulation, and some experience in using it. I recommend this work to all for listening, and to the brave and strong hearted for playing it.

    Review: Clockwork Green

    Well, I find it hard to describe this piece. The best I can say is that the composer does so well all the things I struggle with. If I were looking for a composition teacher, I would be torn between Tjako van Schie and Jay Anthony Gach! From the start, the clock reference is quite obvious, but never trite. The balanced opening and ending worked quite well, a feature that I particularly like.
